Adaptive video streaming for embedded devices

چکیده
Recent advances in mobile equipments and wireless communications are making the Internet increasingly heterogeneous in terms of network, hardware and software capacities. Moreover, resources availability on the Internet varies unexpectedly. Thus, providing an efficient access to multimedia services requires that multimedia streams be adapted according to the environment constraints. One approach to this issue is based on the use of intermediate nodes within the network to perform such adaptations (media transformations, protocol conversion, and data transcoding) thus minimizing intrusivity with respect to legacy applications. Many research works have followed this approach, but they lack the flexibility required to fully address the issue. In this purpose, we designed and implemented a framework for network-based adaptations of multimedia streams. To reach the required flexibility, this framework provides support for dynamic configuration and reconfiguration of adaptations processes. A language called APSL (Adaptation Proxy Specification Language) allows the specification of such (re)configurations. A specification is translated into a component-based software architecture which evolves dynamically according to execution conditions. We describe the implementation of this framework on top of the Microsoft DirectShow® environment and report on a performance evaluation which demonstrates the effectiveness of the approach.

متن کاملAnalysis of video delay in Internet TV service over adaptive HTTP streaming
The paper deals with OTT TV service based on adaptive HTTP streaming to deliver video content to various devices over unmanaged, best-effort IP network. One of major drawbacks of adaptive streaming technology is a significant video latency comparing to traditional TV broadcast. In this paper, causes of video latency in Internet TV architecture are identified and quantified by theoretical analys...

Real-time entertainment services such as streaming video and audio are currently accounting for more than 60% of the Internet traffic, e.g., in North America’s fixed access networks during peak periods [1]. Interestingly, these services are all delivered over-thetop (OTT) of the existing networking infrastructure using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) which resulted in the standardization...
متن کاملAn Adaptive MPEG-4 Streaming System Based on Object Prioritisation
Streaming of video and multimedia content has generated a lot of interest, especially with the recent development of mobile devices with multimedia capabilities. However, ubiquitous multimedia systems face many challenges, such as varied and limited network performance and viewing device capabilities. Adaptive streaming systems are frequently used to reconcile these limitations, while also prov...

In ubiquitous environments, the exchange of different types of real-time video data can be extremely useful under various circumstances, particularly during disasters. For instance, in the wake of a catastrophe, it would be extremely important to assure real-time transmission of video data of escape routes, nearby regions of safety, and the locations of survivors. To assure real-time transmissi...
